The invention of album art can get lost in the story of technological mastery. But among all the factors that contributed to the rise of recorded music, it stands as one of the few that was wholly driven by creators themselves. Album art — first as marketing material, then as pure creative expression — turned an audio-only medium into a multi-sensory experience. This is the story of the people who made music visible.

A cherished memory is reading the fake newspaper that came with my dad's copy of Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick. Packaging wasn't just for vinyl: Squirrel Nut Zippers put out CDs with extras if you popped them into a Mac. So much fun.

I know I have felt less connected to music over the decades and maybe it has a little to do with how MP3s and streaming don't really offer much beyond the track itself, let alone the experience of a record.

Last year I happened upon some original Blue Note records in superb condition and decided to scan the covers. Reid Miles is mentioned in the OP and he did these covers.
