As of October 2024, the unemployment rate in the US stands at 4.1 percent โ but in some states, that figure is much higher. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Visual Capitalist mapped the unemployment rate in each US state.
When it comes to the country's highest rates of unemployment, the District of Columbia and Nevada are tied for first place, at 5.7 percent. California and Illinois follow closely behind, with rates of 5.4 and 5.3 percent, respectively.
The lowest unemployment rates were found in less populated states like South Dakota (1.9 percent), Vermont (2.3 percent) and North Dakota (2.4 percent).
North and South Dakota aren't the only Midwestern states experiencing low unemployment, though; Nebraska (2.7 percent), Iowa (3 percent) and Wisconsin (2.9 percent) also have below-average rates.
