Based on analysis by the Education Data Initiative, the map below shows the average federal student loan debt per borrower in each US state. The data includes Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico, and is accurate as of October 2024.
The highest student loan debt was found in DC, where the average borrower owes $54,795. The federal district also has the largest share of residents in student loan debt (17.2 percent).
After DC, there are three states where the average student loan debt exceeds $40,000: Maryland ($43,692), Georgia ($42,026) and Virginia ($40,137).
North Dakota is the only US state where borrowers owe less than $30,000. Roughly 11 percent of the state's residents are in federal student loan debt, with the average amount owed standing at almost $29,650.
