In 2023, global youth unemployment fell to just 13 percent, its lowest level in 15 years. While the figure represents a strong rebound from the high unemployment rates of the pandemic, figures vary wildly in different parts of the world.
Based on data from a report by the International Labour Organization, the map below shows the unemployment rates among youths β those aged between 15 and 24 β in each global region in 2023.
The highest level of youth unemployment was found in the Arab States (28.6 percent), followed by Northern Africa (22.5 percent). Across these regions, the combination of low infant mortality rates and high fertility rates, which resulted in high labor force growth from the 1970s onwards, is cited as a possible driving factor.
Youths experience the lowest levels of unemployment in Northern America, where the rate was just 8.3 percent in 2023, and Sub-Saharan Africa, where it stood at 8.9 percent.
