According to Pew Research, being middle class in the US means making between two-thirds and double the country's median income β which is $80,610, as of 2023.
Using data from the Census Bureau, Visual Capitalist visualized the income distribution of all American households in 2023.
By Pew's definition, around 40 percent of households in the US are middle class, with earnings of between $53,000 and $161,000 a year.
Seventeen percent of households β the biggest share overall β are in the $100,000 to $150,000 income bracket.
