Almost 39 percent of males are circumcised worldwide, but rates vary drastically from region to region. Using the most recent data available, from a 2016 research paper, Visual Capitalist mapped the male circumcision rates of countries and territories across the globe.
Male circumcision rates are highest in Morocco, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, where 99.9 percent of men are circumcised. Afghanistan and Tunisia follow behind, with rates of 99.8 percent.
Circumcision for religious reasons is most common in Jewish- and Muslim-majority countries. As a result, 99 percent of men aged 15 or older are circumcised in North Africa and the Middle East.
There are also cultural and health-related reasons for people to undergo the procedure. The World Health Organization, for example, recommends voluntary medical male circumcision to reduce the risk of HIV in heterosexual men living in high-incidence areas such as Eastern Africa.
