When it comes to wealthy Americans' favorite places to live, the young and millennial cohorts have chosen Florida and Texas over anywhere else in the US β but the country's affluent Gen Zers are after something different.
To find out where in the US is most popular with rich Gen Z Americans, SmartAsset analyzed IRS data for the 2021 and 2022 tax years and ranked the US states based on the net inflow of households aged under 26 with incomes of $200,000 or more.
New York gained by far the most wealthy Gen Zers overall, with a net inflow of 773 qualifying households. In second and third place were Florida and Tennessee, who welcomed 89 and 33 high-earning Gen Z households, respectively.
With a net loss of 80, Illinois said goodbye to more wealthy Gen Z households than anywhere else in the country. Washington (-78) and Massachusetts (-76) followed closely behind.
A handful of states β including Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota and Alaska β saw no movement of rich Gen Zers at all.
