The average US household spends around $270 a week on groceries, but depending on where in the country you are, those bills can be much higher.

Using analysis by Delish, Visual Capitalist mapped the average weekly cost of groceries in each US state. The figures come from the most recent US Census Bureau data, and are accurate as of October 2023.

Households in the country's two non-mainland states, Hawaii ($334) and Alaska ($329), spend by far the most on weekly groceries. Being isolated from the mainland, neither state produces enough food locally to offset the cost of imports.

There are 17 other states where weekly grocery bills exceed the national average, including California ($298), Nevada ($295) and Mississippi ($291).

The lowest grocery costs are found in the Midwestern states of Wisconsin ($221), Iowa ($227) and Nebraska ($235), where economies tied to farming and food production make prices more affordable.
