If you could move to any city in the world, which one would you pick? If your answer is Dubai, you've got something in common with people in 60 countries across the globe, according to a new study.

To find out which cities people in the US and elsewhere dream of relocating to the most, Remitly analyzed Google search data for the term "move to [city]" in 164 countries between October 2022 and September 2023. The city that received the most searches in a given country were considered that country's most popular destination.

Key findings:

  • Dubai is by far the most popular city in the study, with 60 countries — including the US, UK and Canada — most interested in relocating there.

  • The second-most desirable destination is Miami, which tops the list of 12 countries worldwide, followed by Paris, with 10 countries.

  • When it comes to out-of-state cities in the US, New York and Portland are tied for first place. According to Remitly's research, both cities are the most searched-for locations in 12 states each.

I wonder if the people in florida who want to move to Naples were talking about Naples, Italy or Naples, florida.

  2. This is a great example of someone looking at data and inferring the wrong information. Dubai is the most boring city in the world. Aside from the authoritarian regime, human rights abuses, and sand storms, there is simply nothing interesting there. The most common search term was probably "why would anyone move to Dubai"

The query people use is: "Why are IG influencers moving to Dubai". And the answer is mostly because of prostitution and tax avoidance.

The search term here is "move to" so theoretically people in most countries could be searching for "what's the worst possible country to 'move to'".

Why Dubai? People living in democratic countries want to live in country that violates a number of fundamental human rights. Even American that are so proud of their freedom? WTf

They offer a very different kind of freedom. As long as you follow the rules. freedom from heavy government taxation and the freedom of personal safety. Neither are anything to scoff at.

Surprised that Glendale, CA didn’t show up as a most-searched city for Armenia. I guess it’s a given that you’re going there at some point…

Seriously, how can Dubai be so over-represented? I mean the temperature is basically at the wrong end of comfortable and you want to move to a city that is so expensive? The study must be flawed, or maybe it's a multiple choice with Dubai on the top and compares that to Lubbock, TX.

Yes, I cannot believe people want to live in such backward country that violates a number of fundamental human rights. Maybe study is payed by some sheik?

How is Dubai so overrepresented? study must be flawed..

    1. Unknown 11 months ago

Or maybe they are doing a great PR job (I think they are, been there a few times, it's not all that).
