Over 186 million Americans will vote in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. Most of the country's states tend to vote overwhelmingly for either the Democratic or the Republican party — but a handful, known as swing states, will likely end up tipping the outcome.
The map below, by Visual Capitalist, shows the median household income in each red and blue state, as well as the seven swing states. The figures are accurate as of 2023.
Household incomes tend to be higher in Democratic states. There are many blue states where the average earnings exceed $90,000 a year, including Massachusetts ($107,000), Maryland ($102,000) and New Hampshire ($99,000).
Republican states generally have lower household incomes, with several earning below than the national median of $81,000. The lowest average incomes in the US belong to the red states of Mississippi ($55,000) Louisiana ($58,000) and West Virginia ($60,000).
The household incomes of the country's swing states are: Arizona ($83,000), Nevada ($81,000), Pennsylvania ($80,000), Wisconsin ($80,000), Michigan ($77,000), Georgia ($72,000) and North Carolina ($69,000).
