
The median household net worth in the US is estimated at around $187,690 โ but in at least two states, that figure is more than twice as high.
To find out which American households have the highest net worth, SmartAsset analyzed US Census Bureau data for 2022, using a cumulative 6.34 percent inflation rate to translate estimates to December 2024 dollars. Data was not available for Alaska, Delaware, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming.
The highest net worth was found in Hawaii, where households have an estimated median net worth of $502,563. Washington households take second place, with a net worth that, at $398,881, is 20 percent lower than the first ranking state.
There are five other states where the median household net worth exceeds $300,000: Massachusetts ($327,953), Maine ($326,570), Utah ($324,975), Maryland ($323,912) and Colorado ($301,687).
Louisianans have the lowest net worth in the country. The state's median household net worth is only an estimated $76,458, less than half of the national average. Mississippi ($87,667) and Alabama ($95,919) households follow behind.
With an average of $152,066 put away, the retirement savings of households in Massachusetts rank second only to Hawaii ($159,510). New Jersey residents have saved up the third-biggest sum for retirement, at around $137,179.
