In 2024, America's GDP stands at around $29 trillion — and each of the states' own economies are comparable to those of entire countries.
To show just how much GDPs vary across the country, Visual Capitalist matched each US state with a country whose economy is similarly sized. The data came from the Bureau of Economic Affairs and the International Monetary Fund, and is accurate as of October 2024.
California — the country's largest state economy, with a GDP of $3.9 trillion — most closely resembles India, the fifth-largest economy in the world.
The state with the second-largest GDP, Texas ($2.6 trillion), is comparable to Italy when it comes to economy size, while New York ($2.2 trillion) is as big as Canada.
The smallest state economy belongs to Vermont ($44 billion). The Green Mountain State's GDP is closest in size to Nepal, which ranks just 101st among global economies.
