Nationwide, around 41 percent of Americans are unmarried — ranging from as low as 28.3 percent to as high as 58.5 percent, depending on the city.

Using 2023 data from the US Census Bureau, SmartAsset looked at the married, divorced and unmarried populations of 119 cities across the country, as well as the number of single men for every 100 unmarried women. Only cities with at least 100,000 people were analyzed.

The largest share of people who have never been married were in Rochester, New York (58.5 percent), where single men outnumbered single women 102.4 to 100. Boston, Massachusetts (57.4 percent), was home to the second-highest percentage of singletons, while Detroit took third place with 57.2 percent.

The Southern California city of Oceanside had 152.7 single men for every 100 single women, the highest ratio in the study. Following behind was Fayetteville, North Carolina, with a ratio of 141.5 to 100.

When it comes to the cities where single women outnumber their male counterparts, New Orleans, Louisiana, took the lead, with just 85.3 unmarried men for every 100 unmarried women.

There are five cities where more than half of the adults were married: Plano City, Texas (55.9 percent); Colorado Springs, Colorado (52.9 percent); Chesapeake, Virginia (52.7 percent); Chula Vista, California (50.5 percent); and Garland, Texas (50.1 percent).

At 15.7 percent, Columbus, Georgia, had the highest divorce rate overall. Divorce rates also exceeded 15 percent in Spokane, Washington; Toledo, Ohio; and Henderson, Nevada.
