Another day, another awful take about poor people.

Every day, somebody says or does something that earns them the scorn of the internet. Here at Digg, as part of our mission to curate what the internet is talking about right now, we rounded up the main characters on X from this past week and held them accountable for their actions.

This week, we've got the James Bond IP changing hands, someone who thinks late marriage is a woman's worst fate, an inhumane take on the food stamp program and a lesson in how not to write about someone who's still alive.

Thursday

Amazon MGM

The character: Amazon MGM, movie studio, now James Bond intellectual property owner, new Bond villain

The plot: This week, news broke that Amazon MGM has taken over the IP rights to the James Bond franchise from long-time producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who will now become co-owners without much say.

The repercussion: A lot of folks, including Jeff Bezos himself, had fun piling on the jokes. While everyone knew the Bond IP was being fought over, and that it's time for Craig to be replaced anyway, it's now pretty clear where things are headed for 007. Expect shows, spin-offs, and much, much more.

Monday

Stella

The character: Stella, a thinker for every woman, nightmare marriage scenario theorist

The plot: Stella, an X user who is unabashed when it comes to sharing opinions and jokes online, proclaimed that every woman has one fear that trumps all others. "Every woman's biggest nightmare is late marriage," Stella wrote.

Stella's chaotic neutral stance has over 50 million views at the time of writing, and the hundreds of quote-tweeters only added to its humor.

The repercussion: Mostly people pulled back the curtain on what their real nightmares were, or went a step further and beat Stella at their own game. And, of course, if you looked closely, there were tons of earnest replies, and I hope by now they've gotten the joke.

Monday

Jeremy Kauffman

The character: Jeremy Kauffman, "political activist," ghoul

The plot: If you use the app formerly known as Twitter, you'll know that it's nothing short of a cesspit these days, and the world's worst people are more emboldened than ever to share their most reprehensible takes on there.

One such example is Jeremy Kauffman, a particularly unpleasant guy who made a failed bid for the Senate in 2022, has criticized the end of apartheid in South Africa and ran the New Hampshire Libertarian Party X account that last year tweeted that whoever assassinated Kamala Harris would be "an American hero". On Monday, Kauffman decided to take a swipe at poor people, suggesting that food stamps should be replaced with nothing but rice and beans to prove that those on the program are actually hungry.

The repercussion: Many were quick to condemn Kauffman's inhumanity. Others argued that if Kauffman is so worried about people taking advantage of government handouts, he should start with returning the $220,000 PPP loan he allegedly took out a few years back.

RTÉ News

The character: RTÉ News, Irish news service, poor chooser of words

The plot: Pope Francis, bishop of Rome and head of the Catholic Church, has been in hospital this past week with double pneumonia. His health struggles have made headlines all over the world in recent days, but one outlet's coverage of the 88-year-old's condition sparked more of a reaction than others.

The first half of the tweet shared by Ireland's RTÉ News — specifically, where it says the pope "passed a peaceful night" — led many to initially believe that Pope Francis had died.

The repercussion: While a few users were genuinely unhappy about the RTÉ News X account's choice of words, most people responded in jest.
