As of August 2024, the median sale price for a single-family home in the US stands at $385,000 β€” but in many states, houses sell for far, far more than that.

Using data from ATTOM, Visual Capitalist mapped the median home sale price of each US state. The figures are accurate as of September 2024.

In the two most expensive states β€” Hawaii ($851,930) and California ($776,000) β€” median house prices are more than double the national average.

Home sale prices also exceed $600,000 in the District of Columbia ($659,072), Massachusetts ($640,113) and Washington ($609,540).

In West Virginia ($167,110), Mississippi ($183,507) and Louisiana ($190,900), house prices are less than half the US median.
