Six Cult British Detective Shows That Instantly Put You In Investigator Mode
PBS, the BBC and Netflix have given crime and mystery fans so much to revel in over the past decade. It almost makes us want to be in England, on a foggy night, just to be closer to the action.

Why do so many murders happen near London? Fictional or otherwise; maybe it was Jack the Ripper who kicked it all off. The country known for being the home of Sherlock Holmes definitely has its fair share of police procedurals, where very British actors solve cases with a stiff upper lip.

These are our choices for the best binge-worthy procedurals if you've been waiting to scratch that crime itch. Let us know in the comments if you have more recommendations for all the sickos out there.

'Luther' (2010-2019)

If you can't get enough Idris Elba, who can, then your go-to source for more Elba should be all five seasons of "Luther," and the Netflix movie "Luther: The Fallen Sun." While it's always fun to see Elba play a detective, the real hidden MVP of this show is Ruth Wilson, who plays a cunning and ruthless Alice Morgan. Wilson deserves to be more famous, she's excellent.

'Collateral' (2018)

A four episode tour de force of writing, acting and direction, "Collateral" is more than just a mystery with Carey Mulligan starring as a detective solving a seemingly random murder of a pizza deliver boy. It's a snapshot of a country dealing with xenophobia and immigration, and it's a real state-of-the-nation parable wrapped up in a conspiracy-laden hate crime.

'Broadchurch' (2013-2017)

If you were watching this live — back in 2013 — then you were probably are wondering why David Tennant, Olivia Colman and Jodie Whittaker weren't more popular and famous. In 2024, two of them have been on "Doctor Who," and the other is an Academy Award-winning actress at the top of her game. "Broadchurch" is a somber piece of work and a very slow burn.

'Sherlock' (2010-2017)

In the future, when we look back on the careers of Steven Moffat, Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch, odds are this version of "Sherlock" is going to be what they're all remembered for fondly. A modern day retelling of the character, this is still the most critically acclaimed version of the Baker street detective we've gotten (far more than the Robert Downey Jr. films or the CBS show with Lucy Liu). Sure, the final season goes off the rails, but it's still fun enough to worth powering through.

'The Fall' (2013-2016)

Anything Gillian Anderson is in, we are going to recommend you at least check out. Anything with Gillian Anderson as a detective, we are going to double down on that. Instead of aliens and David Duchovny, this time it's hunting a serial killer played by Jamie Dornan. With less than 20 episodes in total, you could definitely knock this show out over two weekends, it's a cat and mouse chase with two knockout actors.

'Endeavour' (2012-2023)

This one is complicated to explain: there's a fictional detective named Inspector Endeavour Morse — who got a series adaptation based on the novels he's originally from — and then there was a spin-off called "Lewis," but what we're talking about is the prequel "Endeavour." If that made sense, then you can enjoy the adventures of a young Morse as he runs around solving crimes with the Oxford City Police.

Honorable mentions: "Line of Duty," "Happy Valley" and "Top of the Lake" if you like New Zealand, and not England

Comments

  1. Need to add "Vera" and "Midsommar Murders" to this list and also "City Homicide" if you like Australia...actually I love Brit/Aussie/NZ crime shows and can think of tons that are very watchable! If the Law and Order UK version was very good....

My first thought was "Wire in the Blood"
