They say a problem shared is a problem halved — and when it comes to paying rent in big cities, that couldn't be truer.
To find out how much money renters could save by living with a roommate, SmartAsset compared the median rents for one- and two-bed apartments in 100 of the US's largest cities. Cities were ranked based on the potential savings from splitting a two-bed apartment with someone else.
Renters in New York City could save as much as $1,865 per month by moving in with a roommate, the biggest saving of any city analyzed. Following behind is Jersey City, New Jersey, where splitting rent with another person could result in monthly savings of $1,350.
The median cost of a two-bedroom apartment in Chicago rose from $2,100 to $2,660 over just one year — an increase of nearly 30 percent — but renters in the city can still save around $770 with a roommate.
While splitting rent will always save you money, some large cities are relatively affordable to live alone in. The median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Wichita, Kansas, is a very reasonable $690 — renters there will only see savings of $250 a month by sharing an apartment — while renting solo in Akron, Ohio, costs just $760.
