The folks over at USAFacts created maps, based on CDC data, to show how the leading causes of death in the US have changed over the past two decades โ and the numbers paint a pretty bleak picture.
In 2001-2002, the top cause of death for children across all 50 states was transport accidents. By 2020-2021, however, suicide or homicide had become the leading causes in 11 states, plus Washington, DC.
Over the same period, the leading causes of death in the US for 18- to 44-year-olds changed from transport accidents, cancer or major cardiovascular disease to fentanyl overdose, homicide or suicide.
The only age group that hasn't seen a change is 65 years and older, where major cardiovascular disease remains the most common cause of death in every state.
