Most people go to college to secure jobs that are high-paying, high-skilled or in specialist areas β€” but not all majors are created equal.

To find out which US college majors have the worst prospects for employment, Visual Capitalist analyzed New York Federal Reserve data (up to February 2024) and ranked the country's top 10 majors by their unemployment rates. The chart also includes rates of underemployment β€” where graduates work less than full-time or in roles that they're overqualified for β€” to provide additional context.

The top three worst majors for finding a job are art history, liberal arts and fine arts; roughly eight percent of graduates are unemployed, while more than half are underemployed.

Following behind in fourth place is aerospace engineering, with unemployment and underemployment rates of 7.8 percent and 17.9 percent, respectively.
